Theresa Barbara Simmons was born in a farmhouse on November 8th, 1928, in Defiance, Iowa to Paul and Mary Bissen. She was raised in a farming community until her later teenage years when she joined a convent and studied to be a nun for three years. Months away from completing her vows she abandoned her vocation and left the convent, moving to Omaha, Nebraska.

She met her husband, Lester Harrison Simmons, while working at a restaurant in Omaha. She was a waitress, Lester was a cook. They married December 18th, 1951 and had three children, John, William, and Ruth Anne.

In Omaha, Theresa was constantly working. After her stint as a waitress she worked for 21 years unloading grease barrels from train cars. In her later years she worked for 5 years at Omaha World Herald.

Most people would have retired in their late 60’s. Theresa wanted to keep busy and spent an additional 10 years helping out at her son’s convenience store until her early 80’s.

Theresa was the face and embodiment of the American worker. This drive was passed down to her entire family, who are all the face of hard working Americana.

Theresa was preceded in death by her husband, Lester Simmons; her parents, Paul and Mary Bissen; her brothers, Melvin, Donald, and Joe Bissen; sisters, Rita Benjamin, “Sister” Leona Hildargard Bissen, and Marie Kramer.

She is survived by her daughter, Ruth Anne (Charles), sons John and William (Marie); sisters Margaret Adams and Armella (Germain) Reding; brothers Paul Jr. (Martha) and Kenny (Alma).

7 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
